Baby Pushchairs Types and Features-Part 1

Let's begin to go over the basic baby pushchairs types and the features that may be present with each. This is the first of a multi-part series of articles on baby stroller types.

In this article I am going to cover standard baby pushchairs and lightweight and umbrella strollers. In Part 2 I talk about baby travel systems, 3 wheeler pushchairs and strollers, baby jogger. Part 3 will be about twin pushchairs, strollers, double tandem pushchairs, and stroller accessories.

Standard

First, you have your standard pushchair, pushchairs among the most popular styles. The standard baby pushchairs offer many options for comfort and convenience. Aluminum frame design is common for most standard models, allowing for resistance to rust, improved durability, bettermaneuverability, and easy maintenance.

As we have discussed in the past, keep the weight of the stroller, pram, pushchairs buggies in mind as you test drive them. Standard baby pushchairs can weigh from 12 to 24 pounds even with the aluminum frame.

Standard size pushchairs are a great all-purpose choice. They range from rugged models to more delicate English-style prams or buggies. The ability to easily fold the stroller into a compact package makes them great for parents on the go. Most appropriate for standard pushchairs are newborns because they offer the feature to fully recline.

Many are considered convertible, in that they can be used as a baby pram and pushchair, so they adapt as your baby grows. Whether your baby is a newborn or slightly older, they willappreciate the shock-absorbing suspension available systems and oversize tires for the smoothest ride on varied terrain.

The age range for standard baby strollers depends on whether it fully reclines. If so, then the baby pushchair standard would be considered safe for a newborn. Otherwise, it is appropriate for ages four months through four years of age.

Among the many features of standard baby strollers you may consider: Extendable handles; extra seat padding; dual wheel brakes; multiple-position seat recline and back support; easy-to-use folding mechanism; storage basket; adjustable footrest; removable front tray; removable weather boot; reversible handle for conversion to pram; larger, all-terrain wheels; and canopy.

Lightweight and Umbrella

Easy to fold andextremely light, lightweight pushchairs offer the most basic features and are made to store easily in the car trunk, closet, or in the overhead bin of a plane. While this type of baby stroller is convenient for quick trips to the store or park, many families find they are not as comfortable for the baby as the standard or full-size models, especially on longer outings. Still, a lightweight baby pushchair is great to have when baby prams pushchairs buggies, baby travel systems, or are too unwieldy for the situation.

Umbrella strollers, so called because of their hooked handles, are ultra-lightweight models and are best used as a second stroller. These are just the ticket as affordable, lightweight strollers to take traveling or to keep in the trunk of the car. Keep in mind thatumbrella strollers are not recommended for use with infants or newborns who may require a fully reclining seat and support for the neck and head.

The lightweight stroller is safe for a newborn if the stroller reclines completely. Most umbrella strollers do not recline fully, however, or have suspension features. For these reasons it is best to wait until your baby is at least four to six months old before starting to use an umbrella stroller.

Most umbrella strollers feature aluminum frames and weight in as little as five pounds. Many umbrella models prevent accidental closing through the use of a safety device. Umbrella strollers and pushchairs are available in lightweight to wide price range according to the included features. Both will last well into your child's preschoolyears, say ages three to four.

Features of lightweight and umbrella strollers include: one-step fold; aluminum frames; canopy; half-reclining seat; super light body weight; and locking swivel wheels.
